GORDELIER, Alfred John

Alfred John Gordelier was born in London in 1893 to George Gordelier and Caroline Blay. He was the second of their five children, the youngest of whom died in infancy in 1907. The family lived in St Luke’s in Islington and had moved to Wood Green by 1900. George Gordelier gave his occupation as ‘Car Driver’ and ‘Motorman’. In the 1911 census Alfred, aged eighteen, described his occupation as ‘Tramway Servant Point Man’.

Alfred’s older brother George enlisted in the Wiltshire Regiment in 1916. Alfred enlisted in the Essex Regiment, but it is not known when. In 1918 he was with the 1/8th (Cyclist) Battalion which had been in Ireland from February 1918 and in October were in Tulla and Naas. Presumably returning home on leave he travelled on RMS Leinster on the 10th of October. He did not survive the sinking nor was his body recovered. His name is recorded on the Hollybrook Memorial in Southampton and on the Wood Green Memorial in London.
